Member Spotlight - Wally Orr

Crossfit 870 Spotlight member of the Month

Wally is a very hardworking and fast paced guy!  We're proud of what he's been able to accomplish both inside and out of the gym.  Fun to be around, great at pushing himself and knowing what he's capable of day in and day out, he's truly a joy to work with!

-Tell us a little bit about yourself. Do you have a family? Where are you from, where do you work? Aside from CF, what do you enjoy doing?

I am 36 years old, I have been married to my wife, Rebecca for 16 years. We have two children, Charlie (12) and Abbie (11). I grew up in Harrisburg and met my wife while I was working in Tuckerman. I have worked for Bill’s Fresh Market for 18 years as a store manager and as our company has grown my job has transitioned into me being supervisor over all of our locations. I enjoy my work but my family is my real passion. There is nothing better than getting home at the end of the day.

-When did you start at CrossFit 870? What made you start?

I started CrossFit in July 2012. My wife had started at 870 a couple of months before I did and she enjoyed it. I came just to see what it was about and ended up loving it.

-What did you used to do for fitness/sport before crossfit?

I have never done any kind of working out or sports (with the exception of 7th grade football). I have always worked hard, but never for the purpose of exercise. I used to say that I would rather bleed than sweat but I have come to enjoy sweating.

-What’s your favorite crossfit move/lift/WOD? What’s your least favorite?

Favorite move: Burpees / Least favorite: Double unders, they screw with my head

Favorite lift: Squat clean, I just think it looks cool. / Least favorite: Snatches- no need to say more

Favorite WOD: Filthy 50 / Least favorite WOD: Nancy, I hurt for a month after that one.

-What is your favorite memory of crossfit?

My most memorable moments are failures. I remember not being able to row 1k in one setting. Or not being able to do a bar dip…at all. Sucking at double unders, the list could go on. Those moments were embarrassing but they made me want to work harder to get better and I have.

-What would you say to someone who is just starting CrossFit?

Work thru the suck! It’ll be hard sometimes to come back to the gym when your whole body wants to stay on the couch, but come anyway. You are making an investment in your own life. Consider each workout a deposit into that investment account and don’t stop depositing. It will pay off.

Steady plodding brings prosperity…Proverbs 21:5

-What do you like most about Crossfit 870?

Coaches and classmates, I’ve never had a bad experience at 870. All of the coaches at 870 care about how we are progressing, help us correct mistakes or poor form and are very encouraging. It’s great to see people who have finished their workout get around and encourage others who are still at it. I also like the competitive nature of CrossFit. I always look at times and weights on the whiteboard before a workout, check Phillip’s time, then get after trying to beat it. (Usually unsuccessfully!) I don’t know where else you can get that kind of motivation and see how you stack up against your peers.

Our facility and equipment is also first class.

-What kind of Animal would you call yourself in the gym?

I think I’d be a mule.
